English Story - Reog Ponorogo

Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess named Dewi Sanggalangit. She was the daughter of famous King in Kediri. Her beautiful and gentle manner attracted Princes and Kings from neighbouring Kingdoms who wanted to ask for her hand to be his wife.
Unfortunately Dewi Sanggalangit seemed not keen enough to settle down. It inevitably confused her parents. In fact, her parents have been very long for the presence of a grandchild. “My daughter, when will you stop to reject every man who propose you?” asked the King  one day.
“Father … actually I am not willing to get married yet. But if you insist me to settle down at the soonest, I’ll do. However I have some conditions that must be fulfilled by my would be spouse.
“Then what are your them that my daughter?”
“I don’t know …”
“How weird …? “King said.
“I will meditate asking for God’s guidance. After that I will meet you to convey my wishes.”
Thus, three days and three nights Dewi Sanggalangit meditated. On the fourth day she went to her father.
“Father, my future husband should be able to present an exciting performance. A performance that have not existed before. A kind of dance with gamelan accompaniment. Equipped with rows of twin horses as much as one hundred and forty. Will be used as a wedding procession. Lastly must be able to bring the two-headed beast. “
“Wow that really difficult conditions that you ask for!” Said the King.
Although the proposed requirements were difficult to be fulfilled, the King still announced it to everyone. Everyone could follow the competition, no matter whether he was a prince, son of a nobleman or an ordinary person.
The applicants who had been the passionate to marry Dewi Sanggalangit were discouraged. Many of those who withdrew because they felt unable to meet the Princess’ wish list.
Finally, only two men claiming to be able fulfill Dewi Sanggalangit request. They were the Kings of Lodaya Kingdom, Singabarong and King of the Bandarangin Kingdom, Kelanaswandana.
The King was very surprised to hear both Kings willingness to fulfill Dewi Sanggalangit request.  King Singabarong  was a unique man; he was a tiger-like headed man, with  a fierce and cruel nature. While King Kelanaswandana was a handsome and dashing one, but have strange habits, he admired the boys. He considered them as beautiful girls.
But the conditions had been set, Dewi Sanggalangit could not derail the requirements that had been announced.
King Singabarong  of Lodaya was a ruthless and cruel ruler. All of his will must be obeyed. Anyone who rebelled would be killed. King Singabarong hulking. From the neck up tangible terrible tiger. Bushy and full of fleas. That is why he maintains an avid peacock pecking-fleas lice.
He already had a concubine whose numbers aplenty. But not yet have a consort. According to him, until this moment there is no woman who deserved to be queen, unless the Dewi Sanggalangit of Kadiri. So He was hoping to fulfill requirements posed by the Dewi Sanggalangit.
King  Singabarong has ordered his servants to find the twin horses. Mobilize the artists to create an exciting spectacle, and get a two-headed beast. But the job was not easy. Horse twins can be collected, but the spectacle with new creations have not been created, as well as two-headed beast has not been acquired.
So one day he called his prime minister named Iderkala.
“Hi inderleka, try to investigate how the Kelanaswandana preparing the dewi sanggalangit request. We must not lose by Kelanaswandana. “
Prime minister Iderkala with his best soldiers immediately went to the Bandarangin kingdom, by pretending to be a trader. They investigate the various efforts made by King Kelanaswandana. After conducting a thorough investigation during the five days they returned to Lodaya.
“Your Majesty,  the Kelanaswandana almost succeeded in realizing request Sanggalangit Dewi. I see more than one hundred horses twins have been collected. They also have prepared an exciting show, which is amazing. “Prime minister Iderkala reported.
“Oh damned! Then soon he could seize Dewi Sanggalangit as his wife. ” King Singabarong said. “And what about the two-headed beast, what has also been prepared by them?”
“Only the animals that they have not been prepared. But it seems a little more they can find it. “Continued the prime minister Iderkala.
King Singabarong became very angry. He got up from his seat and said loudly.
“Patih Iderkala! Starting today, prepare the best soldier and equipped  with weapon. Every time they should be ready to rush Bandarangin governed. “
Thus, King Singabarong  intend to seize the King Kelanaswandana effort. After a good preparation, the King Singabarong ordered spies to investigate the route King Kelanaswandana  would take, from Wengker to Kadiri. The plan is King Singabarong will invade them on the road and rob the work of King Kelanaswandana, to be handed to dewi Sanggalangit.
king Kelanaswandana who ruled the Wengker  kingdom, handsome and manly stature. He ruled justly and wisely. But there is bad character, he likes to fondle boys. He considered the handsome boy  and comely stature is like teenage girls. This is especially worrisome royal officials and priests. Causing grief for people who have lost their son as King of satisfying lust. This is a major concern of royal officials and priests. Causing grief for people who have lost their son as King of satisfying lust.
Prime minister Pujanggeleng  and the priests was trying to advise the King to leave his bad habits but their advice was useless. King still collect handsome boys.
One day the King Kelanaswandana, called all royal officials and priests. He said that he would stop the habit if he can marry Dewi Sanggalangit of Kadiri. Because he had a dream, that he met with a beautiful girl in his sleep. According to the Gods, the girl that will stop the bad habit fondle boys.
All officials and ministers approved the will of the King who wanted to marry Dewi Sanggalangit. So when they heard the Dewi Sanggalagit proposed requirements, they are not afraid, all empire servant, both the officials, artists, ordinary people are willing to work hard to fulfilled the request of Dewi Sanggalangit.
Because all people give their support, then in a short time King Kelanaswandana can prepare the request of Dewi  Sanggalangit. Only two-headed beast that has not been earned. Prime minister Pujanggeleng who worked furiously to find the beast finally gave up, stating inability to his King.
“It doesn’t matter!” Said King Kelanaswandana. “About two-headed beast, I will search for it myself. Now increase alertness, I smell bad signs from neighboring kingdom. “
“Your Majesty mean?” Asked the duke of Pujanggeleng curious.
“Why do not you pretend to be ordinary people, Mingle with residents in the market and other crowd.”
The order was executed, then Patih Pujanggeleng understand the meaning of the King. Apparently there is an intruder from the royal Lodaya. They are the choice troops posing as a traveling salesman. Pujanggeleng duke who also hold similar disguises, finally able to pry the information, what is the soldier of Lodaya came to Bandarangin
Lodaya spy feel thrilled after getting the necessary information. He intends returning to Lodoya. But before passing the border, the men had surrounded her Patih Pujanggeleng, because the soldier was chosen to fight so bandarngir soldiers  have no other choice but to kill him
Pujanggeleng duke meet  King Kelanaswandana.
“What do you get?” Asked the King Kelanaswandana.
“There are intruders from the Lodaya kingdom who want to extract information about the sire effort to fulfill the requirements from Sanggalangit Dewi. king Singabarong, intending to rob us on the way to Kadiri. “
“Damn!” Said King Kelanaswandana. “So the King Singabarong will use a sneaky way to get Dewi Sanggalangit. Then we destroyed the Lodaya kingdom. Prepare our troops. “
. Meanwhile, King Singabarong awaiting reports from spies who were sent to Bandarangin seems restless. He immediately ordered the duke of Iderkala followed to the border. While he himself immediately went to the Castle to see the peacock, because at that time head feels very itchy.
“Hi peacock! Quick peck the lice on my head! “Cried the King Singabarong with a shaky hold itching.
The usual peacocks perform their duties immediately alighted on the shoulders of King Singabarong and pecking at the lice on King Singabarong head.
Peck-peck the peacock feels good, fun, like a cradle so that the King Singabarong complacent and finally fell asleep. He did not know the situation outside the palace. Because there is no soldier who dared to report back to him. It has been ordered to soldiers that if he he was in the Castle should not be anyone to go and bother him, if he the order was breached then the perpetrators will be punished to death.
Because he’s asleep, he did not know if out of the palace had come Bandarangin troops invaded and defeated soldiers Lodaya. Even Patih Iderkala sent to the border have been destroyed in advance for passing troop Bandarangin.
When the war is already spreading to the nearby palace of King Singabarong Castle, then  he woke up to noises. While they still hold the bird perched fleas pecking her head, when seen at a glance from the front of the King Singabarong like two-headed beast that is headed tigers and peacocks.
“Hey why do you fuss?” Cried the King Singabarong.
There was no answer, except the passing shadow, a person is none other than King Kelanaswandana. In a momment King Bandarangin  was out on the front of the King Singabarong.
King Singabarong shocked. “O King Kelanaswandana, what are you doing here?”
“Do not play dumb with me!” Said King Kelanaswandana. “Are not you going to rob my efforts to fulfill the requirements Dewi  Sanggalangit!”
“Hem, so you already know!” Said King Singabarong with a sense of shame.
“Yes, thats way I come to punish you!” Said King Kelanaswandana thus removing its miracle. Directed to the head of King Singabarong. Instantly change Singabarong head. Peacock perched on his shoulder suddenly become one with his head attached to a two-headed King Singabarong.
King Singabarong absurdly angry, he pulled out a keris and jump attacking the king Kelanaswandana. But King Kelanaswandana immediately swung the magic  whip named Samandiman. Whips can secrete the heat and his voice like thunder.
“Jhedhaaar …!” Whip Samandiman so exposed, the body of King Singabarong bouncing, thrashing around on the ground. Instantly his body felt strangely weak and his body suddenly turned into a strange animal, namely the two-headed tiger heads and peacock. He can not speak and has lost his wits. The king immediately ordered his soldiers to capture and bring king singobarong to the bandarngin kingdom.
A few days later, King Kelanaswandana sent messengers who told King Kadiri that he soon arrived with the requirements demanded by Dewi Sanggalangit. King Kadiri immediately called his doughter, Dewi Sanggalangit.
“My doughter do you really willing to become his wife?”
“Father … is King Kelanaswandana can fulfill my requirements?”
Of course, he will come with all the requirements you ask. The problem now, are you sure you wanna become  king’s Kelanaswandana  wife? “
“If it was my soul mate, then I will accept it. Who knew my presence would change his  bad habits. ” said Dewi Sanggalangit.
Thus, on the appointed day, the king Kelanaswandana  came with Reog  dance as accompaniment. king  Kelanaswandana came with the accompaniment of a hundred and forty-four twin horses, with the sound of gamelan, gendang and trumpet the cause strange mix of sounds strange, lilting melodious. Coupled with the presence of two-headed beast that danced wild but beautiful and interesting. Everyone who watched cheered with delight, they go unnoticed danced and pranced excitedly followed the sound of music.
so in the end Dewi Sanggalangit  became the empress of Bandarngin kingdom and brought to Bandarangin in Wengker. Wengker is another name of Ponorogo so at a later date is called the dance Reog Reog Ponorogo.

English Story - Cindelaras

Once upon a time, there was a prosperous kingdom, named Jenggala. The people in the kingdom lived happily with their wise King. The name of the king was Raden Putra. He was accompanied by a beautiful consort of the king, and also a beautiful mistress. But, the mistress had a bad character. She was jealous with the consort of the king, cause she was just the king’s mistress.
One time, the mistress of the king planned tricky plant to the consort of the king. She hated her very much.
“The one who supposed to be the king’s wife is me, not her,” the mistress tought. “I have to do something to throw out her.” The mistress was really a cruel woman. She could do anything to make her eagerness was achieved.

The mistress conspired with the palace physician to do the plan she had prepared. She pretended to be sick. Knowing that his mistress was seriously ill, the king called the palace physician to cure the mistress.
And then, the palace physician examined the mistress’ condition. The physician concluded that there was someone put poison into the mistress’ drink. It caused the mistress had a serious illness. The king was shocked to know this.
“Who did this to her?” The king said angrily.
“It was the queen, your majesty, who put the poison into the mistress’ drink,” the physician lied. He was instructed by the mistress to say this.

The King was so angry. He believed what the physician was said. He instructed the “Patih” to throw away the Queen to the jungle as the punishment. Everyone in the palace was shocked to know this. But, they couldn’t do anything. No one had a braveness to help the Queen from the King’s decision.
Soon after that, the “Patih” brought the Queen into the jungle. He felt pitied to the Queen, because when she was doing the punishment, she was pregnant. “Patih” could not bring himself to kill the Queen. He definitely knew about the mistress’s tricky plan, so he didn’t want to kill the Queen.
“Don’t worry, her majesty, I will tell his majesty that you are killed,” said Patih. To convince about the Queen’s death, Patih spread his sword by rabbit’s blood he caught.
After that, Patih got back to the palace and told the King that he had already killed the Queen. The King felt satisfied with Patih’s report.

After several months, the Queen gave birth a funny cute baby. She gave him name “Cindelaras”. The Queen was so happy with this moment. He could forget his sadness because of the punishment from the King.
Cindelaras was grown up. He became a handsome and smart boy. Since he was child, he made friends with all of animals in the jungle. Everyday he played around in the jungle. He grown as a brave strong boy.
One day, he saw a large black hawk dropped an egg to him. Cindelaras was so surprised, but he was happy and bring the egg home.

“The hawk was really nice, he gave me an egg,” Cindelaras thought.
After 3 weeks, the egg cracked. It was chicken egg. Cindelaras kept the chick happily. The chick grown up and became a good and strong rooster. He played with the rooster everyday. The rooster became Cindelaras’ best friend.

But, there was a unique thing about the rooster. The voice of the rooster was amazing. It could even said something.
“Kukuruyuuuk... My master Cindelaras, he lived in a jungle, the roof made of coconut leaves, his father is Raden Putra...”

Cindelaras was excited with the rooster’s uniqueness. He told this to her mother. Knowing this, the Queen finally told what actually happened She told Cindelaras about why they could live in this jungle. After hearing the story from his mother, Cindelaras decided to go the palace. He wanted to reveal what actually the mistress had done.

His mother gave permission to Cindelaras when he wanted to go to the palace. The mother prayed for Cindelaras’ safe.
On the way to the palace, Cindelaras met some people fighting rooster. Cindelaras was called by one of the rooster fighter.
“Hey, child. Come on. If you have braveness, let’s fight your rooster with mine,” he challenged.
“All right!” Cindelaras said.

When the two roosters was competed, Cindelaras’ rooster fought bravely and could beat the other roosters. He became famous because of his great rooster.
The story about the amazing rooster was spread quickly. The King Raden Putra heard about this. He was really curious about the boy and his rooster. Then he instructed the commander of the palace to invite Cindelaras.

Cindelaras came to the palace and met the King. The King felt admired with the boy, he thought that the boy was smart and handsome, wasn’t like a poor.
The King asked Cindelaras to fight his rooster with the King’s rooster. There was a requirement for this fight. If Cindelaras’ rooster won, half of the King’s properties became Cindelaras. But, on the contrary, Cindelaras’s head would be cut off.

The two roosters foughtbravely. But, no need so long time, Cindelaras’ rooster could beat Raden Putra’s. The people who saw the fight gave applause to Cindelaras and his rooster.
“All right, I admit that I lose in this fight,” said Raden Putra.
Cindelaras just smiled. He was happy to have such a moment like this.
“But, who you really are? Where do you come from?” asked Raden Putra.
Cindelaras bowed to his rooster and whispered something to the rooster. Not so long after that.
“Kukuruyuuuk... My master Cindelaras, his house is in the jungle, the roof made of coconut leaves, his father is Raden Putra...” the rooster crowed repeatedly.
Raden Putra was shocked to hear that. He was confused.
“Is that true, a young boy?” The King questioned.
“Yes, your majesty. My name is Cindelaras, my mother is your wife. I am your son,” said Cindelaras.

To know about this, Patih came closer to the King and said something. Patih told what actually happened. When realized about what truly happened The King regreted his decision to throw away his wife while she was pregnant.
“I will give punishment to the mistress for doing this to my wife and my son.” Raden Putra said angrily.
And then, the mistress was thrown away to the jungle. Raden Putra hugged his son tight and said apologize what he had done. The King and the cornmanders picked up the Queen from the jungle and brought her back to the palace.

Finally, The King Raden Putra, The Queen, and Cindelaras could be together again. After Raden Putra passed away, Cindelaras replaced her father to be the next King He ruled the kingdom wisely and he also was loved by all of the kingdom’s citizen.

English Story - Malin Kundang

Long time ago, in a small village near the beach in West Sumatera, lived a woman and her son, Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang's father had passed away when he was a baby, and he had to live hard with his mother.
Malin Kundang was a healthy, dilligent, and strong child. He usually went to the sea to catch fish, and brought it to his mother, or sold it in the town.
One day, when Malin Kundang was sailing as usual, he saw a merchant's ship which was being raided by a small band of pirates. With his brave and power, Malin Kundang defeated the pirates. The merchant was so happy and asked Malin Kundang to sail with him. Malin Kundang agreed.
Many years later, Malin Kundang became a wealthty merchant, with a huge ship, loads of trading goods, many ship crews, and a beautiful wife. In his journey, his ship landed on a beach. The villagers reconigzed him, and the news ran fast in the town: Malin Kundang became a rich man and now he is here. His mother, in deepful sadnees after years of loneliness, ran to the beach to meet her beloved son again.
When the mother came, Malin Kundang, in front of his well dressed wife, his crews and his own gloriness, denied to meet that old, poor and dirty woman. For three times she begged Malin Kundang and for three times yelled at him. At last Malin Kundang said to her "Enough, old woman! I have never had a mother like you, a dirty and ugly peasant!" Then he ordered his crews to set sail.
Enraged, she cursed Malin Kundang that he would turn into a stone if he didn't apologize. Malin Kundang just laughed and set sail.
In the quiet sea, suddenly a thunderstorm came. His huge ship was wrecked and it was too late for Malin Kundang to apologized. He was thrown by the wave out of his ship, fell on a small island, and suddenly turned into stone.

Math - Persamaan Linear

y = mx + b.\,

Contoh

Contoh sistem persamaan linear dua variabel:
x + 2y = 10,\,,
3b + 5c = 4d+ 20,\,,
5x - 3y +6 = -9x + 8y+ 4,\,

Sistem Persamaan Linear Dua Variabel

Bentuk Umum

Ax + By + C = 0,\,
dimana konstanta A dan B bila dijumlahkan, hasilnya bukan angka nol.

Bentuk standar

ax + by = c,\,

Bentuk titik potong gradien

Sumbu-y

y = mx + b,\,

Sumbu-x

x = \frac{y}{m} + c,\,

Rumus persegi

Persegi dengan rusuk a dan diameter d

Keliling

K = 4\cdot a atau K = 4\cdot s

Luas

L = \ a^2 atau L = \ s^2

Elemen luas

dA = dxdy\!

1. Rumus Faktor Pada Persamaan Kuadrat

di kembangkan menjadi
Dimana kita bisa menyelesaikannya dengan ketentuan :
a = 1
b = x1 + x2
c = x1. x2

1. Carilah akar dari persamaan kuadrat : x2 + 4x -1 = 0
Penyelesaian :

x2 + 4x – 1 = 0

x2 + 4x – 1 + 1 = 0 + 1 (kedua ruas ditambah 1)

x2 + 4x = 1

x2 + 4x + 4 = 1 + 4    ------> pada bagian ini kedua ruas ditambah dengan 4, dimana 4 adalah hasil dari setengah kali koefisien x yaitu

x2 + 4x + 22 = 1 + 4

(x + 2)2 = 1 + 4

(x + 2)2 = 5

(x + 2)2 = +

⇔ x + 2 = +

⇔ x = -2 +

Jadi hasilnya adalah atau

Dalam penulisan himpunan penyelesaiannya ditulis : HP=

English Story - Banyuwangi

Banyuwangi is a name of a district in the province of east Java, Indonesia. It is located in the earternmost part of the island of Java, next to Bali. Bali strait is between Banyuwangi and the island of Bali. The culture of Banyuwangi is unique because it is a blend of Javanese, Balinese and Madurese influence. Here is a well known legend about Banyuwangi.

Long time ago Banyuwangi was called Blambangan. It was a kingdom under a wise king who had a handsome and smart son. Raden Banterang was his name. He liked hunting very much. He often went to forest around Blambangan to hunt for animals. One day when he was in a forest he saw a deer. He chased it and the deer ran deeper into the forest. His horse was so good and strong that he left his guards behind. Unfortunately he lost the deer. As he took a rest under a big banyan tree suddenly a lovely lady appeared in front of him. Raden Banterang was very surprised to see a beautiful girl alone in the forest. He was suspicious that she was not a human being. So he asked her.

'Excuse me lovely lady, do you live around here?'

'No, I don't. I'm from Klungkung, Bali. My name is Surati. I'm a princess, the daughter of the king of Klungkung. I need your help'

'I will gladly help you, but please tell me what your problem is'

'I'm in danger. There was a rebellion in Klungkung. The rebel killed my father but I could escape. My guards took me here but I lose them. Now I'm alone. I don't know where to go. I have no relative here. Please help me'

'You are coming to the right person. I'm prince Banterang from the kingdom of Blambangan. I will protect you. Please come with me.'

Then Raden Banterang took Surati home. He fell in love with her and then several months later he married her. One day when Surati was in the street he met a man. The man called him.

'Surati, Surati'

She was surprised to realize that the man was her brother Rupaksa. Rupaksa told her that it was Raden Banterang who killed their father. He came to Blambangan to take revenge and asked surati to join him. Surati was shocked but she refused to join.

'I'm really shocked to hear the news. But I'm not sure. Raden Banterang is now my husband. He's very kind to me. He never hurts me. He's protecting me. As a good wife I will never betray him. It is my duty to serve him.'

'But he killed our father'.

'It is hard for me to believe it. When I met him he was here, not in Klungkung'

Rupaksa was disappointed with her sister. He was also very angry to her.

'OK then. I have to go now. But please keep my head dress. Put it under your pillow'
Rupaksa gave his head dress to his sister Surati. To respect her older brother Surati put it under her pillow. Several days later Raden Banterang was hunting in a forest when he met a man that looked like a priest. The man greeted him politely. Then he said something.

'Your life is in danger. Someone has an evil intention to you'

'Who is he?'

"Your wife Surati'

"Surati? How do you know?'

'I am a priest. I have clear spiritual vision. I just want to save you. Search her room. If you find a head dress under her pillow then my words are correct. It is from a man who will help her kill you'

'Thank you your Holiness'

Raden Banterang was shocked. He was very angry to his wife then he immediately went home. When he got to the palace he immediately searched Surati's bed room. As he found the head dress under her pillow he was sure that the priest was right.

'You are unfaithful wife. I know that you want me dead. This is the evidence. This is from a man who will help you kill me. Tell me who he is'
Surati was shocked and cried.

'It is my brother's head dress. I met him several days ago when you went hunting. He gave me his head dress and told me to put it under my pillow. So I put it there to respect him. It is him who want to kill you, not me'
But Raden Banterang did not trust her. He gave her a death sentence. He took his wife to a river bank as he would stab his wife and throw her body into the river.

'Before I die, let me say a few words'

'Please do'

'After I die, just throw my body into the river. If the water become dirty and smelly, it means that I am guilty. But if the water become clear and fragrance come out of it, it means that I am innocence'.

Then as Raden Banterang would stab her wife with a kris Surati threw herself into the river. Amazingly the water became clear and fragrance came out of it. Surati was innocent! Raden Banterang regretted his emotional behavior. Since then on he changed the name of his kingdom into Banyuwangi. Banyu means water and Wangi menas fragrance.

English Story - Toba Lake ( Danau Toba)

Once upon a time there was a prosperous village in a far away island called Sumatra. In northern part of the island, lived a farmer whose name was Toba. He lived alone in a hut by a small forest. He worked on his farmland to grow rice and vegetables that he sells to local market. Once day he wanted to catch some fish so he went to a river and fished there. He was very surprised when he got a big fish. The fish was as big as human being. Soon he went home and put the fish in his kitchen. He planned to cook the fish for his dinner that night. When he got to his house that afternoon he took a bath. Then as he walked into his bedroom after taking a bath Toba was very shocked. Do you want to know what happened?

There stood in his living room a very beautiful girl. The girl greeted him nicely. For a moment Toba was speechless. When he could control his emotion he asked her.
‘Who are you? What’s your name? Why suddenly you are here in my house?’
‘Pardon me if I surprised you Mr. Toba, but you took me here. I was the fish that you caught in the river. Now that I become a human being again, I would like to thank you and I will be your servant to express my thankfulness’
‘Were you the fish?’
‘Yes, I was the fish. Look at your kitchen’.
Toba immediately rushed to his kitchen and the fish was nowhere to be seen. He saw some gold coins instead.
‘Whose coins are these? Why there are some coins here?’
‘Those coins are mine. As I changed into human being my scales changed into gold coins’
‘Ok you can live here and work for me. Your room is over there’
‘Thank you very much Mr. Toba’

Since that day the beautiful girl lived in Toba’s house. Since she was very beautiful Toba fell in love with her and not long after that they got married. The girl married to Toba on one condition that he would never tell anybody about her past. Toba agreed to the condition. Several months later Toba’s wife delivered to a baby boy. Their son was healthy. Soon he grew up into a handsome boy. Toba named him Samosir. Unfortunately Samosir was a lazy boy. He did not want to work at all. When his father worked hard in his rice field and farm, Samosir just slept. When he was awake he talked a lot and he ate a lot. Toba was very disappointed with his son’s nature. He hoped that one day Samosir would change into a diligent boy. Day in and day out but Samosir never changed.

Toba used to go to his farm and rice field early in the morning. Then at midday his wife would bring him food. They used to eat lunch at their farm. As he was a teenager Toba and his wife tried to change his behavior. They ordered Samosir to bring food for his father for lunch while her mother stayed at home to do household chores. But Samosir never did his duty well. He always woke up very late. He woke up after midday. Then one day his mother forced him to bring the food.
‘Sam, wake up. Go to the farm and bring the food for your father. He must be very tired and hungry now’.
But Mom, I am tired and hungry too’
‘What makes you tired? You just wake up. Go now. You father needs the food’

Toba reluctantly went to the farm. But he did not go to the farm immediately. He stopped somewhere in the street and ate the food. It was already late afternoon when he got to the farm. His father was disappointed. Then he was angry as he realized that his son had eaten his food. He said sarcastically.
‘O, you are stupid lazy boy. You are son of a fish!’
Samosir was hurt. He went home right away and as he got home he told his mother about his father’s words. Samosir’s mother was shocked. She was also deeply hurt.
‘O Toba. You break your promise so I cannot live with you here anymore. Now you have to accept to consequence of what you did. Samosir, now go to the hill, find the tallest tree and climb it’
‘Why mom? What will happen?’
‘Just do it, never ask any question. Good bye’

As soon as she finished saying that suddenly the weather changed. Sunny day suddenly turned into cloudy day. Not long after that the rain poured heavily. The rain last for several days. Consequently the area was flooded. The whole area became a big lake. Then it was called Lake Toba and in the middle of the lake there is an island called Samosir Island. Meanwhile Toba’s wife disappeared.

English Story - Rapunzel

Rapunzel

Rapunzel

There once lived a man and a woman who always wished for a child, but could not have one.  These people had a little window at the back of their house from which a splendid garden could be seen.  The garden was full of the most beautiful flowers and herbs.  It was, however, surrounded by a high wall, and no one dared to go into it because it belonged to an witch, who had great power and was feared by all the world.
One day the woman was standing by the window and looking down into the garden, when she saw a bed which was planted with the most tasty rapunzel.  It looked so fresh and green that she longed for it and had the greatest desire to eat some.  This desire increased every day.  The woman knew that she could not get any of it and grew more pale and miserable each day.
Her husband was worried about her and asked "What is wrong my dear?"
"Ah," she replied, "if I can't eat some of the rapunzel from the garden behind our house I think I shall die."
The man, who loved her, thought, "Sooner than let my lovely wife die, I will bring her some of the rapunzel myself, no matter what the cost."
In the twilight of the evening, he climbed over the wall into the garden of the witch, hastily grabbed a handful of rapunzel and took it to his wife.  She at once made herself a salad and ate it happily.  She, however, liked it so much -- so very much, that the next day she longed for it three times as much as before.  If he was to have any rest, her husband must once more descend into the garden.  In the gloom of evening, therefore, he set out again; but when he had climbed over the wall he was terribly afraid, for he saw the witch standing before him.
"How dare you," she said with angry look, "sneak into my garden and steal my rapunzel like a thief?  You shall suffer for this!"
"Ah," the frightened husband answered, "please have mercy, I had to have the rapunzel.  My wife saw it from the window and felt such a longing for it that she would have died if she had not got some to eat."
Then the witch allowed her anger to be softened, and said to him, "If this is true, I will allow you to take as much as you like, only I make one condition.  You must give me the baby daughter your wife will bring into the world; she shall be well treated, and I will care for it like a mother."  The man in his fear consented and when the baby was born the witch appeared at once, gave the child the name of Rapunzel and took the baby away with her.
Rapunzel grew into the most beautiful child beneath the sun.  When she was twelve years old, the witch shut her into a tower, which lay in a forest.  The tower had no stairs or doors, but only a little window at the very top.  When the witch wanted to go in, she stood beneath the window and cried,
"Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
Let down your hair."

Rapunzel had magnificent long hair, fine as spun gold, and when she heard the voice of the witch she wound her braids round one of the hooks of the window, and then the hair fell down the side of the tower and the witch climbed up by it. After a year or two, it came to pass that the Prince rode through the forest and went by the tower.  He heard a song which was so lovely that he stood still and listened.  This was Rapunzel who in her loneliness passed her time singing.  The Prince wanted to climb up to her, and looked for the door of the tower, but none was to be found.  He rode home, but the singing had so deeply touched his heart, that every day he went out into the forest and listened to it.
Once when he was standing behind a tree listening to Rapunzel's song, he saw the witch come and heard how she cried,
"Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
Let down your hair."

Then Rapunzel let down the braids of her hair, and the witch climbed up to her.  "If that is the ladder by which one mounts, I will for once try my fortune," thought the Prince and the next day when it began to grow dark, he went to the tower and cried,
"Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
Let down your hair."

Immediately the hair fell down and the Prince climbed up. At first Rapunzel was terribly frightened when a man such as her eyes had never seen, came to her; but the Prince began to talk to her quite like a friend and told her that his heart had been so stirred by her singing that it had let him have no rest.  Then Rapunzel lost her fear, and when he asked her if she would take him for her husband -- and she saw that he was kind and handsome, she said yes, and laid her hand in his.
She said, "I will willingly go away with you, but I do not know how to get down.  Bring a bit of silk with you every time you come and I will weave a ladder with it.  When that is ready I will climb down and we shall escape together."  They agreed that until that time he should come to her every evening, for the old woman came by day.
The witch knew nothing of this, until once Rapunzel said in her distraction, "Oh my, you are so much heavier when you climb than the young Prince."
"Ah! you wicked child," cried the witch "What do I hear thee say! I thought I had separated you from all the world but you have deceived me."
In her anger she clutched Rapunzel's beautiful hair, seized a pair of scissors -- and snip, snap -- cut it all off.  Rapunzel's lovely braids lay on the ground but the witch was not through.  She was so angry that she took poor Rapunzel into a desert where she had to live in great grief and misery.
The witch rushed back to the tower and fastened the braids of hair which she had cut off, to the hook of the window, and when the Prince came and cried,
"Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
Let down your hair,"

she let the hair down.  The Prince climbed to the window, but he did not find his dearest Rapunzel above, but the witch, who gazed at him with a wicked and venomous look.  "Aha!" she cried mockingly, "You've come for Rapunzel but the beautiful bird sits no longer singing in the nest; the cat has got it and will scratch out your eyes as well.  Rapunzel is banished and you will never see her again!"
The Prince was beside himself and in his despair he fell down from the tower.  He escaped with his life, but the thorns into which he fell pierced his eyes.  Then he wandered quite blind about the forest, ate nothing but roots and berries and did nothing but weep over the loss of his dearest Rapunzel.
In this way, the Prince roamed in misery for some months and at length came to the desert where the witch had banished Rapunzel.  He heard a voice singing and it seemed so familiar to him that he went towards it.  When he approached, Rapunzel knew him and fell into his arms and wept.
Two of her tears fell on his eyes and the Prince could see again.  He led her to his kingdom where he was joyfully received, and they lived for a long time afterwards, happy and contented.

English Story - Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty

Once upon a time there was a Queen who had a beautiful baby daughter. She asked all the fairies in the kingdom to the christening, but unfortunately forgot to invite one of them, who was a bit of a witch as well. She came anyway, but as she passed the baby's cradle, she said: "When you are sixteen, you will injure yourself with a spindle and die!"
"Oh, no!" screamed the Queen in horror. A good fairy quickly chanted a magic spell to change the curse. When she hurt herself, the girl would fall into a very deep sleep instead of dying.
The years went by, the little Princess grew and became the most beautiful girl in the whole kingdom. Her mother was always very careful to keep her away from spindles, but the Princess, on her sixteenth birthday, as she wandered through the castle, came into a room where an old servant was spinning.
"What are you doing?" she asked the servant.
"I'm spinning. Haven't you seen a spindle before?"
"No. Let me see it!" The servant handed the girl the spindle ... and she pricked herself with it and. with a sigh, dropped to the floor.
The terrified old woman hurried to tell the Queen. Beside herself with anguish, the Queen did her best to awaken her daughter but in vain. The court doctors and wizards were called, but there was nothing they could do. The girl could not be wakened from her deep sleep. The good fairy who managed to avoid the worst of the curse came too, and the Queen said to her,
"When will my daughter waken?"
"I don't know," the fairy admitted sadly.
"In a year's time, ten years or twenty?" the Queen went on.
"Maybe in a hundred years' time. Who knows?" said the fairy.
"Oh! What would make her waken?" asked the Queen weeplng.
"Love," replied the fairy. "If a man of pure heart were to fall in love with her, that would bring her back to life!"
"How can a man fall in love with a sleeping girl?" sobbed the Queen, and so heart-broken was she that, a few days later, she died. The sleeping Princess was taken to her room and laid on the bed surrounded by garlands of flowers. She was so beautiful, with a sweet face, not like those of the dead, but pink like those who are sleeping peacefully. The good fairy said to herself,
"When she wakens, who is she going to see around her? Strange faces and people she doesn't know? I can never let that happen. It would be too painful for this unfortunate girl."
So the fairy cast a spell; and everyone that lived in the castle - soldiers, ministers, guards, servants, ladies, pages, cooks, maids and knights - all fell into a deep sleep, wherever they were at that very moment.
"Now," thought the fairy, "when the Princess wakes up, they too will awaken, and life will go on from there." And she left the castle, now wrapped in silence. Not a sound was to be heard, nothing moved except for the clocks, but when they too ran down, they stopped, and time stopped with them. Not even the faintest rustle was to be heard, only the wind whistling round the turrets, not a single voice, only the cry of birds.
The years sped past. In the castle grounds, the trees grew tall. The bushes became thick and straggling, the grass invaded the courtyards and the creepers spread up the walls. In a hundred years, a dense forest grew up.
Now, it so happened that a Prince arrived in these parts. He was the son of a king in a country close by. Young, handsome and melancholy, he sought in solitude everything he could not find in the company of other men: serenity, sincerity and purity. Wandering on his trusty steed he arrived, one day, at the dark forest. Being adventurous, he decided to explore it. He made his way through slowly and with a struggle, for the trees and bushes grew in a thick tangle. A few hours later, now losing heart, he was about to turn his horse and go back when he thought he could see something through the trees . . . He pushed back the branches . . . Wonder of wonders! There in front of him stood a castle with high towers. The young man stood stock still in amazement,
"I wonder who this castle belongs to?" he thought.
The young Prince rode on towards the castle. The drawbridge was down and, holding his horse by the reins, he crossed over it. Immediately he saw the inhabitants draped all over the steps, the halls and courtyards, and said to himself,
"Good heavens! They're dead!" But in a moment, he realised that they were sound asleep. "Wake up! Wake up!" he shouted, but nobody moved. Still thoroughly astonished, he went into the castle and again discovered more people, lying fast asleep on the floor. As though led by a hand in the complete silence, the Prince finally reached the room where the beautiful Princess lay fast asleep. For a long time he stood gazing at her face, so full of serenity, so peaceful, lovely and pure, and he felt spring to his heart that love he had always been searching for and never found. Overcome by emotion, he went close, lifted the girl's little white hand and gently kissed it . . .
At that kiss, the prlncess qulckly opened her eyes, and wakening from her long long sleep, seeing the Prince beside her, murmured:
"Oh, you have come at last! I was waiting for you in my dream. I've waited so long!"
Just then, the spell was broken. The Princess rose to her feet, holding out her hand to the Prince. And the whole castle woke up too. Everybody rose to their feet and they all stared round in amazement, wondering what had happened. When they finally realised, they rushed to the Princess, more beautiful and happier then ever.
A few days later, the castle that only a short time before had lain in silence, now rang with the sound of singing, music and happy laughter at the great party given in honour of the Prince and Princess, who were getting married. They lived happily ever after, as they always do in fairy tales, not quite so often, however, in real life.

English Story - Aladdin

ALADDIN AND THE MAGIC LAMP

Aladdin and the Magic LampAladdin was the son of Mustapha, a poor tailor. He was a lazy boy and played all day long. After his father died, his mother earned money by spinning cotton.
One day, a wicked magician met Aladdin in the marketplace. He said, “You must be the son of my brother Mustapha. Take there gold coins for your mother and tell her I will visit her tomorrow.”
Aladdin’s mother was puzzled when she heard this. She knew that Aladdin had no uncle. The magician came the next day. “I left home long ago after a fight with my brother,” he said. “To show how sorry I am, I want to set Aladdin up in a shop and make his fortune.”
The magician bought Aladdin fine clothes and gifts. He also put a ring on his finger. He then took Aladdin past the city gates till they came to a lonely place. They stopped near a huge stone and the magician uttered some magic words. The stone rolled aside and a hole appeared in the ground.
The magician told Aladdin to go down the steps which led to a hall, where there would be a lamp. “Bring me that lamp,” he said. Aladdin went down the steps into the hall. He saw trunks filled with precious stones and sparkling gold. Aladdin found the lamp. He also filled his pockets with as many precious stones as he could.
Aladdin hen climbed up the steps. The magician asked for the lamp. “Help me out first,” said Aladdin. This made the magician very angry. He uttered some magic words and the stone rolled back into place. Aladdin was trapped.
The poor boy was so afraid that he joined his hands in the prayer. As he did so, he happened to rub the ring that the magician had put on his finger. A huge genie appeared before him.
“What is your command, Master?” he said. “Get me out of here!” said Aladdin. In a trice, he was out in the open again. Aladdin ran home with the lamp and all the treasure that he had collected. His mother listened eagerly as Aladdin told her about his adventure.
The next day, when his mother was cleaning the lamp in the courtyard, the same genie who had appeared to Aladdin stood before her. “What is your command?” he said. “Bring us fine food,” said Aladdin. At once the genie laid delicious food before them.
Now Aladdin and his mother began living on comfort. One day Aladdin saw the sultan’s daughter. He wanted to marry her. So he sent his mother some jewels to the sultan to ask for her hand in marriage. The sultan was delighted. He said, “Tell Aladdin to send me forty gold basins filled with jewels. He can then marry my daughter.”
Aladdin rubbed the magic lamp once again. Soon forty slaves appeared, carrying basins of jewels. Aladdin’s mother led them to the palace. The sultan was overjoyed. “I shall be delighted to have Aladdin marry my daughter,” he said. Aladdin ordered the genie to build a fine palace for the princess. The marriage took place with great pomp and show in that fine palace.
Meanwhile, the magician learnt about Aladdin’s good fortune. He knew it was because of the magic lamp. He decided to get that lamp. So he disguised himself as a lamp seller and stood outside Aladdin’s palace, crying,  “New lamps for old!”
The princess heard this and told her maid to exchange Aladdin’s old lamp for a new one. Once the magician got hold of the magic lamp, he rubbed it and the genie appeared. “Take this palace and the princess to my country,” he ordered. The genie did as he was told.
When Aladdin discovered what had happened, he did not know what to do. He joined his hand in prayer. In doing so, he rubbed the ring. The genie appeared. Aladdin told him to bring back his princess.
Soon the palace and the princess appeared before him. Aladdin set the genie free, and he and his wife lived happily ever after.

English Story - Snow White

A long time ago, a child was born to a queen and king and she was called Snow White.  When the queen died, the king married again.  This new queen was wicked and hated Snow white.  The queen gave orders that Snow White was to be treated as a servant.

Snow White grew very beautiful and one day a Prince riding by, saw her at work and fell in love with her.

The queen was beautiful too, and every day she asked her Magic Mirror, "Who is the fairest in the land?" and the mirror always answered, "You are the fairest one of all".

But one day the mirror answered Snow White was the fairest in the land, and in a rage the queen gave orders to one of her Huntsmen to take Snow White into the woods and kill her.

The Huntsman had a kind heart and couldn't do the deed so told her to run away.  She fled into the woods where Seven little dwarfs lived.  Their house was small and strange.

Snow White entered the little house and finding it very untidy, started to clean up.  Upstairs she found seven little beds.  She was very tired and stretching out on one of the beds, was soon asleep.

When the Dwarfs came home they were surprised to find Snow White and after some argument, decided to let her stay.  She promised to cook and look after them.

The Queen discovered where Snow White was living and disguising herself as a witch, took a poisoned apple and set out for the Dwarfs cottage.  She gave Snow White the poisoned apple to eat and as soon as she bit the apple, she sank into unconsciousness.

Thinking she was dead, the Dwarfs built a glass coffin and put her in it. For days she lay in the forest in her glass coffin.  One day, the Prince was riding through the forest looking for Snow White and found her.  He leaned over and kissed her.  She opened her eyes and sat up with a smile. Everyone was happy.  The Prince took Snow White to his palace where they were married and lived happily ever after.
